A donor-advised fund, or DAF, is a philanthropic vehicle established at a public charity allowing donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax benefit and then recommend grants from the fund over time. The Wild Sheep Foundation offers donor-advised funds for irrevocable gifts of $50,000 or more to WSF. Funds may be designated as either a "Spendable Fund" that can be used at any time or an "Endowed Fund" that continues to grow with only a small percentage of the fund's overall value used annually to fund grants. WSF takes the burden off the donor by administering the fund, while the donor may designate themselves or other persons to be advisors to the fund.
Check Out This Potential Scenario
Joe and Laura want to give back to their community by putting their money where it will do the most good. They establish a $250,000 donor advised fund with a community foundation. The couple receives a federal income tax charitable deduction for the amount of the gift. They also get all the time they need to decide which charities to support. After researching community needs with the foundation's staff, Joe and Laura recommend grants for WSF (which they've supported for years) and the American Cancer Society. The foundation presents the charities with checks from the Megan Fund, which Joe and Laura named in honor of their granddaughter. Joe and Laura are delighted to start this personal legacy of giving.
